THE LINCOVE GUIDE
European Down Pillows, Explained
European down pillows are filled with the soft underfeathers of geese raised in cooler European climates, prized for larger, more resilient down clusters that hold loft for years. The result is a lightweight, breathable pillow that cradles the head without flattening. At Lincove, we apply the same standards to our Canadian Hutterite down—sourced from the same family of cold-climate geese—so you can find a true heirloom-grade pillow regardless of label.

What actually makes down “European”
“European down” refers to down harvested from white geese raised in cold-weather regions of Europe—Hungary, Poland, Germany, and the surrounding countries. Cold climates produce mature birds with larger, more three-dimensional down clusters. Larger clusters trap more air per ounce, which is why a quality European down pillow feels lighter, lofts higher, and stays loftier over time than a comparably priced synthetic.
Fill power
Look for 600 fill power and above. Higher numbers mean larger clusters, more loft, and a longer useful life. 700–800 fill power is considered heirloom grade.
Shell construction
A 500+ thread count cotton sateen shell with a tight weave keeps down inside the pillow and dust outside. Double-stitched edges are what stop down from migrating after a few months of use.
Certifications
RDS (Responsible Down Standard) and Downmark® certify ethical sourcing. OEKO-TEX confirms the shell is free of harmful substances. Skip pillows that won’t name their certifications.

How to choose the right one
Start with sleep position, then match firmness and fill power to it. The right combination is what stops the 3am re-fluff.
Side sleepers
Choose firm density and 700+ fill power to keep the head, neck, and spine in line. A taller pillow with high loft prevents shoulder collapse.
Back sleepers
Medium density at 600–700 fill power. Enough loft to support the natural curve of the neck without tilting the head forward.
Stomach sleepers
Soft density, lower fill weight. The head should sit close to the mattress to avoid lower-back strain. European down compresses gently without going flat.
Hot sleepers and allergy-sensitive
Down breathes naturally and regulates temperature, but the shell matters most. A high-thread-count cotton sateen with antimicrobial finish—or a hypoallergenic down-alternative—keeps the bed environment clean.

Related questions
The questions sleepers most often ask before investing in a European down pillow.
European down comes from white geese raised in cold European climates, producing larger and more resilient down clusters than waterfowl raised in warmer regions. The result is a higher fill power, lighter weight, and longer-lasting loft. Down from cold-climate Canadian geese performs at the same level and is often used interchangeably in luxury bedding.
